How to turn a video into a GIF

A GIF is an animated image that plays in a loop, without sound, in any chat, email or web page. Turning a video into a GIF is the simplest way to share a short moment. With this tool you choose the exact part, the width and the frames per second, and you get a GIF ready to download, with no watermark.

The tool reads your video frame by frame and builds the GIF inside your browser. That is why your video never leaves your device and there is no upload to wait for. It works with the formats your browser can play, usually MP4 (H.264), iPhone MOV in Safari and WebM.

The weight of the GIF depends on three things, the length of the part, the width and the frames per second. For a light file, choose a part of 3 to 6 seconds, a width of 480 px and 10 frames per second. For more smoothness go up to 15 fps, and if you need more detail, try 640 px.

How to get a light and sharp GIF

GIFs get heavy quickly because they store every frame as an image. A short part, a moderate width and few frames per second keep the file small. If you are going to share it by messaging, aim for under 5 MB.

If your video has a lot of camera movement, use 12 or 15 fps so it doesn't look choppy. If it is an almost still scene, 8 or 10 fps is enough. For safety, the tool warns you when you choose more than 15 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The GIF is created in your browser, so your video never leaves your device.

Does the GIF have a watermark?

No. You download a clean GIF.

Which video formats can I use?

The ones your browser can play, usually MP4, WebM and MOV. If a file doesn't open, try MP4 (H.264).

Why is my GIF so heavy?

It gets heavier the longer it is, the wider it is and the more frames per second it has. Reduce one of the three.

Can I make a GIF with sound?

No, GIFs don't support audio. To share a clip with sound, use the original video.

What is the maximum length?

You can choose any part, but we recommend up to 15 seconds. Longer gives very heavy files.
